Amarillo Fire Department: Badging Ceremony @ Badging Ceremony
Jan 9 @ 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Information Release

January 8, 2020 – On Thursday, January 9, 2020, the Amarillo Fire Department will be conducting a Badging Ceremony for ten firefighters who recently completed their probationary year with the department. The ceremony will be hosted at AFD’s Fire Administration Building, 310 S. Van Buren and will begin at 3 p.m.

This ceremony is a fire service tradition and has been conducted by AFD for many years during our annual Awards Ceremony. However, AFD has chosen to celebrate this milestone in these firefighters’ careers with a dedicated event moving forward. When a firefighter begins their employment with AFD, they receive a Probationa1y Firefighter Badge that is worn with their uniform. Each firefighter remains a Probationary Firefighter for one year. Throughout that initial year of their career, firefighters must pass written and hands-on tests, showing competency in their knowledge and skills, learn the policies and procedures of AFD, and integrate with their associated crews as an effective member of the team.

Upon completion of this year, probationary firefighters are relieved of their “probationary” status and awarded an Amarillo Fire Department Firefighter Badge. This is a symbol of membership of our department, the commitment to excellence and their dedication to their job. It is not an award. Rather, it is a symbolic right of passage into the brotherhood of firefighters.

The ceremony will be followed by light refreshments and photo opportunities for firefighters and their family in attendance. Media is invited to attend. Please direct any questions to the A.FD Office of Public Affairs, 806.378.9340.
