The Veterans Groups in Lubbock are hosting a significant event on April 16th at the MCM Elegante Hotel in Lubbock. They are hosting 3 Medal of Honor Heroes with a possible 4th.

Their goal is to raise $25,000 for the Character Development Program of the Medal of Honor Society. This program is a specialty built curriculum for elementary/ middle and senior schools, developed by educators for teachers. The courses teach our youth about patriotism, selfless service and the value of freedom. It also teaches anti bullying. It is imperative that this new generation understand and appreciate the real cost of freedom.

The Character Development Program of the Medal of Honor Society is a free resource that educators can use to teach young people about selfless service and patriotism.  The 6 Pillars of the Character Development Program are: 1. Courage 2. Integrity 3. Commitment 4. Patriotism 5. Citizenship 6. Sacrifice.

It is important and fitting to showcase this program as fewer Americans ever before deem themselves to be patriotic…only 38% in a recent poll.  Gen Z is the group born between 1997 to 2010. Only 16% of that group have strong feelings and passion for our country.  Millennials fare a little better at 36%.  Only 1/4 of 1 % of Americans are on active duty today which is a low number.  Recruiting for today’s military is  not meeting their necessary number which is terrible.  So, the Character Development Program is a breath of fresh air for teaching our youth about the value of freedom. It teaches young people to preserve our heritage.

They are hoping for Amarillo to be represented at this dinner since one of the 3 Medal of Honor Heroes is Dwight Birdwell who was born in Amarillo.  He will be attending with his daughter and son in law. He will be added to the Medal of Honor memorial at the Monument of Courage in Lubbock. The other 2 MOH are both Vietnam guys, Jim McCloughan and Mike Thornton.  Mike Thornton has been to Amarillo a couple of times and has an excellent book “By Honor Bound”.   They hope to add a 4th MOH recipient.

A table of 8 is $1,350.00.  If an organization could afford this amount  it would be a good time to get acquainted with these amazing heroes.  Maybe everyone could split the cost for a table.  There are only 65 living MOH recipients so having 3 or 4 in one place is pretty amazing.   Below is an attached flyer with details about the event.   Thanks for consideration and please advise your thoughts.  Please feel free to forward to anyone who might be interested.
