League to sponsor two Candidate Forums for May 1 elections

The League of Women Voters will co-sponsor Candidate Forums with Panhandle PBS in a televised format on two Sunday afternoons in April, according to an announcement from Linda Vaughn, LWV forums chair.  Both will start at 2:30 p.m. on Channel 2 television and will last approximately 90 minutes.

On Sunday, April 11, the forum will feature candidates running for the Amarillo City Council and the Canyon City Commission.  Karen Welch, KACV senior content producer, will serve as moderator for the forums featuring city candidates.  There are 16 candidates running for the Amarillo City Council, with every seat contested.  In Canyon, one Commission seat is contested with two candidates running.

On Sunday, April 18, the forum will be for candidates running for the Amarillo College Board of Regents and the Amarillo, Canyon, and River Road independent school district boards.  Leeann Kossey Overstreet, public information officer for the Randall County Sheriff’s Department, will moderate the college forum.  Jill Gibson, chair of AC Mass Communications, will moderate the school board forums.  A total of 24 candidates are vying for seats on these four boards.

Early voting for the May 1 elections runs April 19-23 and 26-27.  The Amarillo League’s printed Voters Guide is expected to be ready for distribution to public libraries and numerous other locations in Potter and Randall counties in the coming week, said Kay Porter, the League’s director of Voters Guides.  Voters can also use the League’s online Voters Guide, www.VOTE411.org, to obtain a customized ballot.  The online Guide is now live, and all a voter needs to do is put in his or her address to see the races and candidates that will be on the voter’s ballot, and read the candidates’ answers to questions posed by the League.
