The City of Amarillo (COA) Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) is celebrating National Arbor Day in style with St. Mary’s Catholic School.

PARD is hosting a tree planting ceremony in Ellwood Park, located at 1100 S. Jackson St. on Friday (April 26) beginning at 2 p.m. The public is welcome to celebrate the planting of five Bur Oak trees. Two trees were donated by Arborlogical Inc.

Ellwood Park was selected as the receipient of these trees due to the park experiencing the loss of over 35 trees recently due to age and breaks in irrigation.

As part of the event, the student body at St. Mary’s Catholic School will be provided the opportunity to learn about the the history of Arbor Day as well as proper tree planting techniques. They will also be invited to assist city council members and PARD board members with the planting of new trees.

“There is no better way to recognize Arbor Day than to include the community in a unique  event,” said COA Director of Parks and Recreation Michael Kashuba. “This is an opportunity to engage young students with a fun and educational project that benefits not only Ellwood Park, but could also inspire students in the future.

“The City of Amarillo Parks and Recreation Department is grateful to Arborlogical Inc. for helping make this event possible.”
