WT’s Virtual Commencement Ceremony

We can’t celebrate the Class of 2020 in person, but we can still salute their achievements!

West Texas A&M University will host a virtual commencement ceremony from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. May 9 at https://wtamu.edu/commencement. The ceremony will feature as many traditional elements as possible, including the Donning of the Stoles, the WT alma mater and more. We’ve asked the graduating students to record thank-you videos that’ll be posted in their respective colleges, too.

We’re also asking the community to take part in this historic occasion. Please record a short video and post it on your favorite social media channel. Make sure to tag WT, and we’ll share as many as possible during the virtual commencement ceremony! Use our hashtag: #WTClassOf2020

Thanks!

National Salvation Army Week @ National Salvation Army Week
May 11 all-day

This year, The Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend will celebrate our 66th annual National Salvation Army Week on May 11-17, 2020. Each year, this week serves as an opportunity to celebrate our volunteers, donors and program beneficiaries who have enabled us to serve in the United States for 135 years.

This week is observed immediately following Mother’s Day in May and was first declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 – 74 years after The Salvation Army arrived in the U.S.

In his speech, President Eisenhower noted, “Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of human brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country far from home, friendliness and warm concern. In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans. Giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of us all.”

NewsChannel 10 partners with United Way!

NewsChannel 10 is partnering with United Way to host a virtual telethon on Thursday, May 14 to benefit Texas Panhandle citizens in need during this pandemic.
When:
Thursday, May 15 from 5:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.
During each newscast, we will tell stories, take phone calls with a virtual Zoom phone bank on-air and bring you information on the needs of our area. Businesses and individuals have already pledged support and now it’s time to involve the entire community.
Why:
We have quickly been pushed into unknown territory and we recognize this is a frightening time.
If you’ve wondered how the best way is to help your neighbors get through this, the United Way is the answer because the United Way knows where the greatest needs are right now in our community. Also, volunteers who are knowledgeable about our community help decide how your money can make the greatest impact for the most people.
That’s why we have partnered with the United Way of Amarillo & Canyon to raise money for their COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund. This fund will provide direct aid to those who aren’t able to get their family’s basic needs met – needs like food, shelter and utilities.
How to donate:
If you are ready to help your neighbor in need, call (806) 331-9800. A virtual phone bank from all over the area will be answering your phone calls eagerly

That is right, the need is great and the time is now for us to “Do it better” and step up to help those in need in our community.
Thanks for your consideration, support and sharing of this information.

Call us at 806.331.9800 and talk to a volunteer and consider giving a donation. 100% of the funds are redirected to critical needs in the community.
