Building a framework of positive role models is vital to developing responsible, confident young adults. Incidentally, National Youth Confidence Day, on October 20, encourages us to connect and inspire today’s youth for tomorrow’s success.
National Youth Confidence Day, celebrates the energy, spirit and potential of young people. The day is an acknowledgment of all they will accomplish, respectively. Guidance, leadership and mentors will help light the path, indeed. In addition, today’s youth will navigate the obstacles that will inevitably lay before them.
Take the opportunity to welcome a young person into your life and accept their mistakes. Interestingly, their mistakes will be similar to ones you’ve made yourself. Offer encouragement that these mistakes are merely lessons. Therefore, let them know they will only need to learn from them and gain experience to attain their goals. Share your wisdom and listen to their fears. Celebrate their successes and help them to learn from their defeats, respectively.
Support Your Local Chamber of Commerce Day is observed annually on the third Wednesday in October. The Chamber of Commerce’s primary objective is strengthening local businesses of all sizes. The best way to honor this organization is to use the services of local chamber businesses.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has been in existence since 1912. President William Howard Taft first brought the concept for an organization that would represent the concerns of U.S. businesses in an address before Congress in December of 1911.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce offers numerous programs both nationally and internationally in support of businesses. Whether they’re raising awareness of regulations, setting initiatives, or campaigning for better markets, the Chamber provides support to the communities they serve. Additionally, they provide outstanding resources for startups, online businesses, and those looking to advance their business outlook worldwide.
National Get Smart About Credit Day on the third Thursday in October annually promotes learning about good credit. It is a national campaign where volunteer bankers help counsel young people on responsible credit habits.
The importance of sound financial management is something that can and should be taught at a young age. Learning healthy credit habits can be one of the most valuable lessons a young person can learn.
What Affects Credit Scores
- Amount of debt you carry – Paying off the amount you charge to your credit cards each month helps to improve this amount. Showing that you are reducing debt each month gradually increases your score over time.
- Age of credit history – The older your credit history (and the longer it is in good standing) shows a trend toward reliable financial standing.
- Reports to collections agencies – Any inaccurate reporting to a credit agency needs to be reported immediately. The sooner you resolve an inaccuracy, the quicker your credit report can be corrected. Obtain a letter from the collection agency once you have been able to confirm the error and submit it to all the credit reporting agencies.
- Late payments – Any time make a late payment, especially on a credit card or loan, this will be reflected on your credit report. Pay early, pay on time. If you use your online banking system to make payments, remember to review your bank’s turn-around-time for payments. Take their delays into account and schedule accordingly to avoid any late payments.
- The number of hard inquiries for credit – If you are considering a loan for a car or house, each inquiry will be registered on your credit report. When your credit is in good standing, it doesn’t have a big impact.
- The number of accounts – Opening and closing accounts can have an impact on your credit score. Depending on the number of accounts, the impact on your score could be huge.
Each year on October 21st, people across the nation observe National Reptile Awareness Day. Created not only for reptile lovers to celebrate, but National Reptile Awareness Day also promotes education, conservation, and appreciation for reptiles. It is a day to learn about their natural habitats and the ecological threats that they are facing.
A reptile is any amniote that is neither a mammal nor a bird, is cold-blooded, has scales or scutes and can lay eggs on land. Scutes are the thick bony or horny plates which form the dermal layer of such reptiles like turtles and crocodiles.
There are more than 10,000 species of reptiles. The day promotes the wide varieties, their habitats and how we benefit from reptiles, too.
On October 21, discover one of America’s first skin treatments and favorite skincare ingredients when you celebrate National Witch Hazel Day.
Since the late 1800s, distilled Witch Hazel Extracts have been formulated into many of the world’s most recognized cosmetic and over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceutical products. This effective, versatile plant extract naturally provides skincare, haircare, eye care, and topical OTC drug products with toning, oil control, and astringency claims – powering hundreds of essential personal care and skincare products including:
- astringents
- facial toners
- shampoos
- conditioners
- hemorrhoidal treatments
- personal cleansing
- post-partum care
Today, Witch Hazel-based products help care for millions of Americans of every age each year. According to the United States Pharmacopoeia or USP, the organization that sets standards for strength and purity for active natural ingredients, genuine distilled Witch Hazel is a clear, colorless distillate often identified by its characteristic Witch Hazel scent. It is prepared by distilling the recently cut and partially dried dormant twigs of the Witch Hazel plant, Hamamelis Virginiana Linne’, and combining it with 14% Ethyl, Natural Grain Alcohol which functions as a natural preservative.
As an astringent active ingredient, Witch Hazel not only cleanses, but also helps surface tissues to contract, helping to protect tissue and reduce irritation, allowing the skin to heal.

From: Shannon Lackey Subject: Early Voting
There are eight Constitutional Amendments and the City of Amarillo has a proposition on this ballot. These “odd” year elections historically have a very low voter turnout. I hope that’s not the case for this one. You can find a Full Text of all the amendments and sample ballots on our website, www.randallvote.com
If any eligible voter is in need of a mail ballot application, they can call our office (806-468-5510) or print one from our website. The application must be received in my office by October 22, not post marked but received.

AMARILLO – Want to see firsthand how the Texas Pace Authority works in helping property owners? Amarillo has a perfect example.
The Amarillo Barfield PACE Forum is scheduled for Thursday (Oct. 21) from 9:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. The forum is at the Barfield Hotel, 600 S. Polk St.
