“Star Wars” Day! @ "Star Wars" Day!
May 4 all-day

Today is “Star Wars” Day: May the Fourth be with You! May 4th has long been the date to celebrate one of history’s greatest franchises, and the movies’ longtime star, Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), is ready to spend the month honoring Star Wars. In 2018, Hamill had fun by taking the classic, “May the 4th be with you,” and creating a saying for every day of the month. Hamill took to Twitter to say he’s willing to do it again, but only if fans are okay with him recycling previous ideas. According to his Twitter poll, fans don’t mind a little rerun fun.

Leal’s celebrates Anniversary! @ Leal's celebrates Anniversary
May 4 all-day

Leal’s celebrates Anniversary on May 4th (Opened in 1957!)

Today, May 4th, we celebrate sixty-three years of having the honor and privilege of serving the finest folks on the face of the earth and being blessed throughout those years with thousands of amazing coworkers that have become our extended family.
I want to thank everyone who has supported and encouraged and helped us along this beautiful journey. Our storied history has been made possible by all of you.
My parents taught us to strive to do our very best to serve and treat everyone the same and that meant treating everyone like royalty because that is what you are.
In that tiny building we were shown that the food we served was simply the starting point for showing love and respect and dignifying every person who came to our humble little place.
My mother nursed me in that kitchen five years after she encouraged my Dad to take their life savings of seven hundred dollars and bet it all on a small tortilla machine and a big dream.
Thank you all so, so much for the honor and blessing of allowing us to do what God called us to.
Let’s make the next sixty three years even more amazing…together!
Love all ya’ll and God bless and keep you.

National Foster Care Day @ National Foster Care Day
May 4 all-day

Dedicated to all the children in the U.S. foster care system, National Foster Care Day on the first Tuesday in May encourages everyone to wear blue and raise their voices to show their support for foster youth everywhere.

Kicking off Foster Care Month, National Foster Care Day provides a platform to help repair a system that is plagued with shortages nationwide. Many enter care with little to no belongings and have suffered the effects of abuse, poverty, neglect, or even the death of their loved ones. There is a nationwide shortage of foster parents and stipends that don’t cover the essentials of a growing child.

With over 400,000 children in the foster care system at any given time, and a new child placed into care every 2 minutes, the need for support services, essential items, and foster parents is high. Foster children have an uphill battle with startling statistics to overcome and need the support of our communities across the country. National Foster Care Day shines a light on these children and points us all in the direction of solutions.

Statistics

  • 250,00 children enter foster care each year
  • Only 50% of youth in foster care graduate high school
  • Foster children suffer PTSD at more than twice the rate of US war veterans
  • 1 in 5 foster children experience homelessness within 1 year of aging out of care
  • At ages 17 & 18, one-third of young women in foster care are pregnant or parenting
  • More than 70% of inmates incarcerated were at one point in the foster care system
  • Stipends don’t cover the essentials of a growing child

How to Help

  • Volunteer to become a Court appointed special advocate (CASA) –  CASAs receive specialized training and represent the best interests of abused and neglected children.
  • Become a Foster Parent – Nationwide, there is a shortage of licensed foster homes.
  • Adopt a Foster Child – In the U.S., more than 100,000 children wait for a family to call home.
  • Volunteer through non-profits like Project Blue, Ticket to Dream Foundation and many others that provide mentoring to foster children, require staffing assistance for events and many other opportunities!
  • Share this page – Increasing awareness and interest in the solutions will help foster children heal and grow to their full potential.
National Teacher Appreciation Day @ National Teacher Appreciation Day
May 4 all-day

National Teacher Appreciation Day, also known as National Teacher Day, recognizes dedicated educators across the country. As part of Teacher Appreciation Week, the celebration takes place on the Tuesday of the first full week in May each year.

The National Education Association describes National Teacher Day “as a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives.”

Teachers play a critical role in educating and shaping our children, the future leaders of our country. These kind, patient, hard-working, dedicated, and understanding professionals help mold our children and guide them in positive directions. We entrust our children with teachers, and they affect their lives daily.

No matter where we are in life, a teacher influenced us. They continue to impact our lives every day, too! When we meet new employees with a wealth of skills and abilities, a teacher helped shaped them. Every new business owner, doctor, engineer, or nurse can name a teacher who inspired them. Every one of us has at least one teacher in mind who encouraged and motivated us during our education.

National Weather Observers Day @ National Weather Observers Day
May 4 all-day

National Weather Observers Day on May 4th provides a day for the people who enjoy watching and observing the weather.

Weather observers often assist the National Weather Service as Storm Spotters. These hobbyists are valuable resources for communities.  This day is also an opportunity to get out and learn about a variety of weather phenomena, the history of weather tracking, and find about meteorological instruments.

When is Skywarn Recognition Day?

Around the world, weather stations and weather spotters contribute to hundreds of thousands of observations a day. From land, sea, and sky, these observations provide valuable information that helps predict weather and warn of impending storms. They also contribute to historical data that is studied and may help to better understand weather phenomena.

Cinco de Mayo @ Cinco de Mayo
May 5 all-day

Cinco de Mayo, May 5, is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and the U.S.
The holiday, which honors the Mexican army’s win against French forces led by Napoleon III in the Battle of Puebla in Mexico in 1862, was a symbol of Mexican resistance against foreign rule. From around the mid-20th century, the day has been more generally associated with celebrating Mexican national pride, culture and heritage.
The city of Puebla was later renamed Puebla de Zaragoza, in honor of Ignacio Zaragoza, the general who led the Mexican army in the battle. Today the city houses a museum tracing the history of the battle, while the battlefield itself has also been maintained as a park.

National Astronaut Day @ National Astronaut Day
May 5 all-day

National Astronaut Day on May 5th each year celebrates Astronauts as true heroes. The day’s mission is to inspire ALL to “reach for the stars” by sharing “out of this world” Astronaut stories and experiences.

On May 5th, 1961, Astronaut Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. became the first American in space aboard the Freedom 7 Space capsule. The brief suborbital flight lasted 15 minutes and reached a height of 116 miles into the atmosphere. It was a milestone achievement and a trailblazing example of heroic bravery. This adventurous spirit is the essence of what National Astronaut Day is all about.

By sharing the incredible stories, experiences, and perspectives of actual Astronauts, the mission of National Astronaut Day inspires us ALL to follow our dreams. The day includes both future Astronauts and those who seek to keep their feet on the ground!

National Cartoonists Day @ National Cartoonists Day
May 5 all-day

Observed on May 5th each year, National Cartoonists day honors all those creative ink-stained artists, past and present, and the fascinating pieces they have created. Throughout the years, their talents bring humor, entertainment into our lives while provoking thought and debate, too.

American comic strip writer and artist, Richard Outcault (January 14, 1863 – September 25, 1928) is considered the inventor of the modern comic strip.  At 15 years of age, he studied for three years at the McMicken University’s School of Design in Cincinnati. Outcault created the comic strips The Yellow Kid and Buster Brown.

Outcault was a 2008 Judges’ Choice inductee into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.

On Sunday, May 5, 1895, the readers of the New York World discovered an exciting new addition in their morning paper. On the pages, they found Outcault’s full-color drawings featuring a big-eared, barefoot little boy with a mischievous grin. The first color installment of the cartoon called Hogan’s Alley would later become known as The Yellow Kid and was the first commercially successful cartoon icon.
