Camp TV from Panhandle PBS

Panhandle PBS on Camp TV – a new addition to our educational program lineup for children, aiming to help boost summer learning with a fun, educational, twice-a-week at-home virtual day camp experience.

Camp TV
A Learning Initiative for Children
July – September on Panhandle PBS

Panhandle PBS is bringing Camp TV to its on air programming lineup, as well as parallel online resources, to help boost summer learning across the Texas Panhandle with a fun, educational, twice-a-week at-home alternative to day camp.

Panhandle PBS will broadcast Camp TV episodes on Fridays 2 p.m. and Sundays at 10 a.m. through September 20. Episodes will be available to watch on demand here https://www.pbs.org/show/camp-tv/ with additional Camp TV learning opportunities available on PBS LearningMedia here https://kacv.pbslearningmedia.org/collection/camp-tv/.

Camp TV is a televised day camp experience that children can take part in in the safety of their own homes. An enthusiastic head counselor, played by Broadway performer Zachary Noah Piser, guides “campers” as they learn through play. Campers will explore the arts, music, theatre, nature, science, math, and reading with segments featuring educational and cultural organizations from around the nation such as the New York Public Library, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Bedtime Math, Wildlife Conservation Society, the Memphis Zoo, and more.

Each Camp TV episode will be an hour long and will feature a theme of the day, like “song day,” “cooking day,” and “heroes day.” Every episode also includes a storytelling segment that features a different book of the day. The series is produced by WNET.

Camp TV helps Panhandle PBS meet its mission of inspiring, educating and entertaining audiences across the Texas Panhandle. As a trusted resource and educational partner for learners age 2 and up, Panhandle PBS is providing this series for children, families, educators and education program directors to extend learning opportunities both on and off the screen. Sep 7 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

2020 CENSUS CAR CARAVAN TO TRAVEL THROUGH NORTH HEIGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD THIS LABOR DAY

AMARILLO, TX— On Monday, September 7, the U.S. Census Bureau, in partnership with the North Heights Neighborhood Association and the Amarillo Black Chamber of Commerce, will travel through the North Heights neighborhood as part of their 2020 Census Car Caravan to raise awareness of the 2020 Census and increase response rates in this important community. The caravan will begin at 9 a.m. at the Black Historical Cultural Center, 901 North Hayden Street.

Potter County Commissioner Alphonso Vaughn and County Constables Idella Thomas-Jackson and Georgia Estrada will lead the car procession comprised of North Heights Neighborhood Association President Mildred Darton, Amarillo city leaders, members of the Amarillo Chapter of the NAACP, the Amarillo Black Chamber of Commerce and other neighborhood members of the North Heights community.

The public is welcome to join the car caravan or watch as it travels through the neighborhood. The Census will hand out Census swag and assist those who would like to complete their questionnaires from 9-11 a.m. at the Cultural Center. Bilingual Census Response Representatives will be available to answer questions and will provide the use of iPads. Everyone who completes their questionnaire will be entered in a raffle to win a 32-inch television.

The 2020 Census impacts how billions of dollars in federal funds are allocated to communities each year. Funds are used for critical programs and services such as food assistance, including SNAP and WIC, new roads, infrastructure improvements, and area hospitals and clinics. Federal law protects census responses and answers to the census can only be used to produce statistics and data. The Census does not share information with immigration or law enforcement agencies or allow it to be used to do determine eligibility for government benefits.

Households can continue to self-respond by mail, online at 2020census.gov or by phone 844-330-2020 for English or 844-468-2020 for Spanish. For more information about the 2020 Census, please visit: http://www.2020census.gov or www.census.gov

League of Women Voters Voter Registration Opportunities

“We encourage any citizen 18 or older who is not already registered to vote to come Saturday and get that done!” said Jami Cowart, LWV voter registration chair. “And those who were registered but have moved or changed their name need to get their registration updated as well.”

League volunteer deputy registrars will conduct voter registration at other locations on upcoming dates as follows:

Every Tuesday in September from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on 2nd Avenue outside the JB Kelley Student Center at West Texas A&M University in Canyon.

Much is at stake in the November 3 election, including who will be chosen President of the United States. Local residents will also vote on several state and local races, including the U.S. Senate and U.S. Congressional District 13 (the seat being vacated by Mac Thornberry). Amarillo residents will also vote on a bond issue to fund renovations and expansion of the Amarillo Civic Center.

“If you’re not sure whether you’re registered, you can check your voter registration status on the Texas Secretary of State’s website at voteTexas.gov,” Cowart said. “If you have other questions, call your county election administrator or call the League at 337-2148.”

“The League is nonpartisan; we do not support or oppose political parties or candidates,” she added.
“Instead, we encourage informed and active participation in government. Our vision is a democracy in which every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge and the confidence to participate.”
