Mission Amarillo @ Mission Amarillo
Apr 30 all-day

There’s a lot going on at Mission Amarillo! First, we would like to announce that our annual spring fundraiser, FamFest will be Saturday, May 18 at Sam Houston Park. There will be around 30 vendors, food trucks, carnival games, and silent auction. It’s always a great time for the entire family and a great way to help us do what we do. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, May 18! We will be taking sponsorships for our Event Sponsors starting March 4.

Also, we are continuing to raise funds for our Be-Loved House project. We are making progress towards our goal and hope to begin renovations in the coming months. Residents at Be-Loved House will receive training in various life skills like using a bank, avoiding payday loans and rent to own, learning how to live on a budget, and how to build a credit rating. Ladies can stay in Be-Loved House for up to 2 years. Only 3 months of that will be training and the rest of their time there will be spent putting these lessons into practice. Once their 2 years are over, we will match any money they’ve saved in a savings account up to $2,000. Our goal for all our moms in Be-Loved House is that they will be able to live without the limitations of government assistance when they leave. If you’d like to donate towards renovations, follow this link. https://www.missionamarillo.org/be-loved-house

Last of all, our shoe deliveries are continuing to grow at an unprecedented rate. In past years, we typically deliver around 40-50 shoes a month in January and February. This year has been very different. In January, we gave away 120 pairs of shoes and so far in February we have given away 119 pairs! This unexpected demand has lowered our shoe inventory to far lower levels than we have ever experienced this time of year. As of this writing, we currently have 20 sizes with 10 or less in stock, several with fewer than 7. It doesn’t take long for these  inventory numbers to drop to zero. If you would like to collect shoes for us, please follow this link and we will contact you with all the details! https://www.missionamarillo.org/forms/shoe-request

Thank you for supporting Mission Amarillo and for helping us love our neighbor and equip them for life!

The Amarillo Hispanic Chamber of Commerce invites you to participate as a sponsor for our 2024 Cinco de Mayo Fajita Festival.
Our Fajita Festival is a fajita cooking competition that allows you and your co-workers to partner up and create the best-tasting fajitas. Each team is provided fajita meat, vegetables, and tortillas for the competition and for our community to taste and enjoy the scent of sizzling fajitas.

By sponsoring this event, you have the opportunity to partner with us in our mission to serve the Amarillo area and raise funds for our Scholarship and Internship Program and operations. In turn, we will promote your business, services, and products to thousands of attendees. Join us for our biggest Fajita Festival yet!

We welcome the whole family to join us for fun, music, and all-you-can-eat fajitas (while supplies last) at Hodgetown Stadium on Friday, May 10th. You may contact our office for additional information at the number or email address listed below.

Volunteers Needed: Repair Cafe @ Volunteers Needed: Repair Cafe
Apr 30 all-day

Repair Café is a neighborhood initiative that promotes repair as an alternative to tossing things out. Amarillo’s first Repair Café will be held June 1, 2024. Panhandle residents can bring their broken items to fix them on the spot with the help of voluntary repairers. But until then, Repair Café needs the help of handy volunteers in the area. Join us!

Amarillo Parks & Recreation Senior Services is looking for repair volunteers for our Repair Café event. We are especially looking for people who are handy with:

  • Sewing/Clothing/Textile
  • Bicycles
  • Appliances
  • Furniture/Wooden Items
  • Computers/Electronics
  • Sharpening Knives & Hatchets
  • Or anyone who is simply handy

In addition, we are also looking for event volunteers. These volunteers welcome visitors and serve as a contact point for both visitors and repairers in the Repair Café.

Want to sign up as a volunteer? Follow the Active Adult 50+ link on the Parks & Recreation website: www.amarilloparks.org. You can also reach out to us at jeff.whitsell@amarillo.gov or call (806)378-4290.

See you soon at the Repair Café!

“ Steel Magnolias” @ “ Steel Magnolias”
Apr 30 all-day

“ Steel Magnolias” : The show dates are May 17 – 19.  We have four shows, and the dinner & show package is available to all, except the Saturday matinee.  Additionally, discounts are only available online.  The ticket link is provided below.

Thank you for supporting the arts.  The attached is approved art provided by Dramatists Play Services.

THE STORY: The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.
