The Maverick Boys & Girls Club of Amarillo is excited to announce its Earth Day celebration, taking place on Saturday, April 27th, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at New Light Ministries, located at 1001 NE 24th Ave. This event aims to teach kids at the Maverick environmental stewardship and community engagement through tree planting and community clean up with employees and their families from Atmos Energy.
“Trees and kids both represent life, and we believe in this project that the Maverick is doing in this community, and we wanted to be a part of it and Earth Day is the perfect kick-off to say our planet, our kids, and this project will be around for a long, long time!” said Michael Gonzales, Atmos Energy.
The kids from the Club will be paired with Atmos employees and together will plant 7 fruit trees and participate in a neighborhood community cleanup effort to beautify the surrounding area of the new camp location at New Light Ministries. Together the Maverick and Atmos are highlighting the significance of community partnerships in building a sustainable future for our community, our kids, and even our world.
Every year, summer registration fills up in minutes causing an immediate waiting list for parents who are trying to stay in the workforce. This year the Maverick is trying to meet the community’s need by serving up to 100 more kids by adding an additional location. The Maverick will offer two different camps to choose from: The traditional daily summer camp on Lincoln Street or the new addition- Performing Arts Summer Camp located at New Light Ministries, 1001 NE 24TH.
Members of the Club specifically selected this new location for their Earth Day project in preparation for the new camp. It will be an exciting day as auditions to be in the Performing Arts Summer Camp will be held while the Earth Day project is going on outside. This Friday, 4/26, and Saturday, 4/27, offers a chance for talented individuals to secure a spot with tuition covered. The Performing Arts Summer Camp provides a dynamic platform for young individuals to explore their creativity and talent across various disciplines, including music, dance, drama, and more. By participating in the camp, children can foster confidence, teamwork skills, and a lasting appreciation for the arts and will be able to leave with their first portfolio!

TxDOT Hosts Click It or Ticket Event to Remind Drivers and Passengers to Buckle Up
More than 60 unbuckled drivers and passengers were killed or seriously injured on Panhandle roads in 2023

| MEDIA: | TxDOT seeks to raise awareness about wearing seat belts on Texas roadways |
AMARILLO – In the time it takes to read this sentence, Texans can click their seat belt and save themselves from an early grave — and save their loved ones from the sorrow of preventable loss. To raise awareness, TxDOT will host it’s Click It or Ticket event at the Travel Information Center on Tuesday, May 21 at 10 a.m.
Representatives from the Amarillo Police Department, Potter County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Public Safety and other agencies will join TxDOT to speak about the impact of not wearing your seat belt. *In 2023, there were 62 motor vehicle traffic crashes in the Amarillo District in which unrestrained occupants sustained fatal or serious injuries; these crashes resulted in 21 fatalities and 45 serious injuries. Statewide, there were 1,183 traffic fatalities in which vehicle occupants failed to wear a seatbelt.
In addition to conducting educational outreach, the campaign partners with Texas law enforcement around the state to step up enforcement of seat belt and car seat laws from May 20 through June 2, including Memorial Day weekend. Texas law requires everyone in a vehicle to buckle up or face fines and court costs up to $200. Children younger than 8 years old must be in a child safety seat or booster seat unless they’re taller than 4 feet 9 inches. If they aren’t properly restrained, the driver faces fines up to $250 plus court costs. TxDOT offers free safety seat inspections across the state.
Since Click It or Ticket was launched in Texas in 2002, the seat belt use rate has increased from 76% to more than 90%. Now, 9 of every 10 Texas motorists buckle up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that the Click It or Ticket initiative has saved more than 7,800 lives, prevented 139,000 serious injuries, and resulted in $40 billion in economic savings since its inception in 2002.
TxDOT’s Click It or Ticket campaign is a key component of #EndTheStreakTX, a broader social media and word-of-mouth effort that encourages drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel to help end the streak of daily deaths. Nov. 7, 2000, was the last deathless day on Texas roadways.

*Information contained in this advisory represents reportable data collected from Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Reports (CR-3) received and processed by TxDOT as of the report date. The Amarillo district consists of the following counties: Armstrong, Carson, Dallam, Deaf Smith, Gray, Hansford, Hartley, Hemphill, Hutchinson, Lipscomb, Moore, Ochiltree, Oldham, Potter, Randall, Roberts, and Sherman.
