NATIONAL WORK LIKE A DOG DAY
On August 5th, National Work Like A Dog Day urges us to charge forth and meet every challenge we face. However, if you look to your dog for direction, you may be confounded.
Also good to celebrate actual working dogs (service dogs).

Join us at the Don Harrington Discovery Center every Wednesday at 10:30 am for a special storytime ~ featuring a very special trunk of wonders! Our weekly storytime will be located in a new and exciting spot in the Discovery Center for your littles to discover during your visit. Start your morning with a story and spend the rest of the day exploring our amazing exhibits! This program is included with admission or a Discovery Center Collective membership.
NATIONAL ROOT BEER FLOAT DAY
On August 6 we celebrate National Root Beer Float Day to tell us to float a scoop of vanilla ice cream in an ice-cold mug of frothy root beer. The classic beverage creates a creamy treat loved by generations! #NationalRootBeerFloatDay
NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE DAY
Observed annually on August 7th, National Lighthouse Day honors the beacon of light that for hundreds of years symbolized safety and security for ships and boats at sea. At one time, the beacon of light could be found across almost all of America’s shorelines
NATIONAL SEA SERPENT DAY
National Sea Serpent Day, August 7, commemorates this siting and the many other stories that continue to be told. If you have ever looked out over the water and thought you saw a fantastic creature break the surface, you’re going to want to stick around. We’re going to explore the sea serpent myth. #NationalSeaSerpentDay
PURPLE HEART DAY
Purple Heart Day on August 7 commemorates the creation of the oldest American military decoration for military merit. The Purple Heart honors the men and women who are of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. During the American Revolutionary War, the Badge for Military Merit was awarded to six known soldiers. #PurpleHeartDay
The Christmas in October Holiday Market in Amarillo, TX, is scheduled for Friday, October 24, and Saturday, October 25, 2025.
The event is a gift and craft show hosted by Sharing Hope Ministry at the Amarillo Civic Center Complex in the South Exhibit Hall
- Location: South Exhibit Hall, Amarillo Civic Center Complex, 401 S. Buchanan St., Amarillo, TX 79101.
- Dates & Times:
- Friday, Oct. 24: 12:00 PM – 7:00 PM.
- Saturday, Oct. 25: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
- Admission: Weekend admission is typically $8.00 at the door (Cash, Credit, or Venmo); children 12 and under are usually free.
- Highlights:
- Shopping: Over 100 unique booths featuring home décor, boutique clothing, jewelry, and handmade items.
- Bake Sale: Known as the largest bake sale in the Texas Panhandle, featuring decorated cookies, cakes, pies, and specialty mixes.
- Special Events: Past years have included a “Ladies Night Out” VIP shopping event and photo opportunities with Santa.

Our Education Team offers science-based entertainment for the tots and gives caregivers the opportunity to sit back and relax with Roasters Coffee! A different theme every month makes this program’s storytime and activity exciting for your little learners each visit. 2026 themes:
