PROST! Our annual Oktoberfest celebration, Volksfest, is back, and happening on two separate weekend this year! Join us all day September 20th in Canyon or October 4th in Amarillo for plenty of fun, games, a beard & mustache contest, german food specials, and of course Volksbier! The fun lasts from Open to Close; throw on that Lederhosen or Dirndl and head to the brewery.

Celebrate “Wild West Texas” at this year’s WT Homecoming Parade. Enjoy floats, bands, cars, livestock and more.

This Saturday, October 4 at 1 pm, the Texas Panhandle War Memorial and Education Center will be hosting a one-hour lecture/seminar, “Reflections on the Military”. 

Our guest speaker, Terry Moore, will be presenting a historic overview of the Bombing of Dresden. This will be the third of a five-part lecture series by Mr. Moore related to World War II.

Take advantage of this FREE presentation and tour our military history education center and Museum where we honor and remember our Panhandle Veterans. Test your knowledge in our Education Center with five computer kiosks displaying information about 11 U. S. wars, and visit our outdoor displays including a Huey helicopter, supersonic jet fighter/bomber and the third largest piece of the USS Arizona deck and superstructure. Walk through the gardens and view monuments to over 1,557 Panhandle residents who gave their lives in battle.

We encourage you to visit our education center Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The lectures are held at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial Center, 4111 S. Georgia, at 1:00 p.m. Light snacks will be served.

Open from September 20th – January 9th at the Don Harrington Discovery Center.

Calling young artists and inventors! Immerse yourself in the mind of Leonardo da Vinci– building, sketching, testing, and designing, just like the “Renaissance Man” himself. Hands-on activity tables explore his contributions to art, science, anatomy and engineering. Will you recreate da Vinci’s work, or add an exciting twist that’s all your own?

Included with membership or general admission.

Leonardo’s Lab, a traveling exhibit, was developed by Carnegie Science Center (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and produced in partnership with the Sciencecenter (Ithaca, New York).

75 YEARS OF DEFENDING DEMOCRACY IN AMARILLO: League of Women Voters of Amarillo welcomes the community to celebrate a major milestone on October 4^th at AmTech Career Academy

Since 1950, a group of dedicated citizens in the Yellow City has “envisioned a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge and the confidence to participate.” And now, as the League of Women Voters of Amarillo rolls into our 75^th year, we want EVERYONE to come together to join us in the celebration of “Past, Present & Future.”

This ticketed event is scheduled for:

• Saturday, October 4th
• 5:30 – 8:00 PM
• AmTech Career Academy (3601 Plains Blvd, Amarillo)

• Everyone is welcome, whether you’re in the League or not. The goal of this event is to share the rich history of the organization and how it has shaped voting advocacy in Amarillo for more than seven decades. Members are strongly encouraged to attend, bringing along friends and family to join the fun, learn more about the League, and enjoy the food, community, and educational presentations.

  Our speakers will include:

  • Kylie Kincaid, Assistant Archivist with the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech
  • Joyce LeBombard, President of LWV Texas
  • Kimberly Anderson, President of the League of Women Voters of Amarillo

   

  While the national League has been a leading voice in nonpartisan voting advocacy for over 100 years, our local League has been promoting voter education, voter registration, and civic engagement for three-fourths of that long lifespan. Our members have a wide range of perspectives, opinions and politics, but the League is bound by our commitment to the nonpartisan mission. We work for a place where everyone has a voice, and all who support democracy are welcome to join us.
