PPHM Invites Young Explorers to Dive into History and Science at Summer Camps

Canyon, Texas — Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum (PPHM) is excited to offer two dynamic and educational summer camps for kids, designed to ignite curiosity and spark imagination. This year’s camps are Boulders, Brands, and Bones Camp and STEAM Camp, each offering a unique, hands-on experience tied to the rich history and scientific wonders of the Texas Panhandle.

Boulders, Brands, and Bones Camp (2nd–5th Grade)
Get ready to dig, build, create, and explore! At Boulders, Brands, and Bones Camp, campers will use their hands as much as their brains as they dive into the worlds of history, art, geology, and the Wild West. Each day brings a new adventure—whether it’s STEAM, dinosaurs, geology, or panhandle culture, there’s something new to discover every day! Special guests from the Discovery Center, Wild Hanbury’s, and Dove Creek Equine Rescue will bring the learning to life—whether it’s up-close animal encounters, scientific discoveries, or cowboy culture in action. Cost is $75 (PPHM members) and $95 (PPHM nonmembers) and includes a free t-shirt.

STEAM Camp (3rd-6th grades)
Focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math, STEAM Camp combines creativity with critical thinking. Campers will conduct experiments, build, and design, in a way that brings science and innovation to life. With the help of our wonderful community partners, Discovery Center and Pantex, campers will be exposed to the world of STEAM as it relates to daily lives and various careers as well. Cost is $75 (PPHM members) and $95 (PPHM nonmembers) and includes a free t-shirt.

Space is limited and registration is now open.

Free Home Buyer & Home Improvement Education Class @ Free Home Buyer & Home Improvement Education Class
Jun 26 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Who:              Barrio Neighborhood Planning Committee and Amarillo National Bank

What:             Free Home Buyer & Home Improvement Education Class

When:                        Thursday, June 26, 2025 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Where:           Cactus Cove Inn and Suites meeting room,  2501 East Interstate 40, Amarillo, TX

Why:              Did you know that 50% of El Barrio residents currently own their homes and several of these homes have been owned for three generations? This new percentage is a 2% increase from 2022 and our goal is to raise home ownership in El Barrio neighborhood to at least 55%.

Home ownership helps to improve El Barrio neighborhood by taking better care of your yard and property, having safer neighborhoods, and our families tend to live in their homes longer. To encourage and increase home ownership and home improvement, the Barrio Neighborhood Planning Committee (BNPC) will co-host a free home buyers and home improvement education class, in English and Spanish, with the Amarillo National Bank mortgage staff. This class will be held in the Cactus Cove Inn and Suites meeting room on the northside of the hotel in Amarillo, Texas at 6:00 p.m. Please park on the northside of the hotel.

During this class, you will learn about:

                        1) available homes for sale in or near the Barrio by a local realtor.

                        2) the process to get mortgage or home improvement financing.

                        3) tips for becoming a successful home owner.

                        4) partners and resources available to future home owners.

We invite all adults to participate in this free class and you are welcome to bring your children. Spanish interpreters will be available and other interpreters will be provided by the United Refugees Services nonprofit.

Free bottled water, a free dinner from a food truck, and door prizes will be provided by Amarillo National Bank.

The Barrio Neighborhood Planning Committee, a nonprofit 501c3 organization, was established in March 2017 in coordination with the City of Amarillo with a mission of preserving and revitalizing El Barrio neighborhood.

PPHM Hosts Opening Reception for Jeri Salter Exhibition in Partnership with AMoA

Canyon, Texas — The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum (PPHM) is proud to present a new exhibition showcasing the landscapes of renowned Texas artist Jeri Salter. A special opening reception will be held to celebrate the exhibit, welcoming museum members and VIP guests to experience Salter’s stunning pastel works in person.

The exhibition is organized by PPHM in partnership with the Amarillo Museum of Art (AMoA), with additional support provided by Dr. Kent Roberts and Illene Roberts Balliett Foundation and Foltz Fine Art. This collaboration highlights a shared commitment to showcasing regional art and providing meaningful cultural experiences for the Texas Panhandle community. A selection of works by Frank Reaugh is also on exhibit and serves as a complement to Salter’s contemporary interpretations of light interacting with the unique landscape and broad skies.

The opening reception will take place:

June 26
6-8 PM
Amarillo Museum of Art (AMoA)
Light refreshments will be served. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from our Curator of Art, Deana Craighead, meet the artist and explore the exhibit.

Often compared to Frank Reaugh for their shared medium and subject matter, Jeri Salter is widely recognized for her expressive landscapes that capture the subtle beauty of Texas and the Southwest. Through her expert use of pastel, Salter invites viewers to slow down and experience the sense of place each scene evokes.

“This exhibition not only showcases Jeri’s exceptional talent but also reflects the spirit of the land and people that define our region,” said Deana Craighead, Curator of Art at PPHM. “We’re excited to welcome visitors and celebrate this partnership with AMoA.”

The exhibition will remain on view now through September 28. For more information about the reception or the exhibit, please contact visit www.panhandleplains.org.
