GRAND OPENING CEREMONY TO BE HELD FOR THE COMMONS AT ST. ANTHONY’S
Historic former St. Anthony’s Hospital site begins new chapter as an
affordable, active adult housing community
AMARILLO, TEXAS — Community leaders, project partners and local stakeholders will gather to
celebrate the grand opening of The Commons at St. Anthony’s, a transformative redevelopment project
that is bringing high-quality, affordable housing for active adults ages 55 and older to Amarillo’s North
Height’s neighborhood.
Located on the site of the historic St. Anthony’s Hospital campus, The Commons at St. Anthony’s is
providing 124 affordable apartment homes for active adults, including studio, one-bedroom, and two bedroom
units. The development also features community gathering spaces, fitness and business
centers, an outdoor gazebo and gardens designed to support active and connected living.
Established in 1901, St. Anthony’s Hospital was the first hospital in Potter County and served as a
cornerstone of healthcare in the Texas Panhandle for nearly a century. The hospital housed the region’s
first nursing school, cared for residents through the Great Depression, and trained nurses who served
during both World Wars.
Following its merger with High Plains Baptist Hospital in 1996, operations gradually transitioned to the
Baptist campus, and the St. Anthony’s campus remained vacant after its closure in 2004. Through this
redevelopment effort, the historic property has been revitalized to help address Amarillo’s growing need
of affordable housing while preserving an important piece of the community’s history.
Celebrate the property’s new beginning.
The public will be invited and welcomed for tours of the facility on Sat., June 27 at 10:00a.m.

AAMW to Host Free Spay/Neuter Voucher Clinic
for North Heights Pet Owners on June 27
AMARILLO – The City of Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare Department (AAMW) is conducting a free pet spay/neuter voucher clinic for residents of the North Heights Recognized Neighborhood . The clinic is June 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hines Memorial Park, located at 1300 N.W. 18th Ave.
Eligible residents receive vouchers for up to four pets per household to receive free spay/neuter surgeries through participating veterinary partners. Microchips and vaccines will be provided at no cost. To qualify, residents must bring their pets to the clinic in person along with proof of residence within the North Heights Recognized Neighborhood. Pets must be at least four months old. Vouchers will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited in supply.
“By making preventative veterinary care more accessible, we hope to create long-term positive impacts for both pets and the people who care for them,” said AAMW Outreach Manager Kali Dennis. “The actions we take today can have lasting benefits for our community in the future, and we encourage eligible residents to take advantage of this opportunity.”
Participating veterinary partners include Amarillo Veterinary Clinic, Cadillac Veterinary Clinic, Canyon Road Veterinary Clinic and Timber Creek Veterinary Hospital.
Funding for the program was secured through support from Amarillo city council following the success of a pilot program in the San Jacinto neighborhood last year with 89 vouchers issued. In March, 55 vouchers were distributed to residents of the Barrio neighborhood.
