these crashes and protect drivers and our workers, TxDOT is asking drivers to slow down and pay attention in work zones. To raise awareness, TxDOT will host its Work Zone Awareness event on Tuesday, April 22 at 2 p.m. at the TxDOT Travel Information Center.
Representatives from local law enforcement and first responding agencies will join TxDOT to speak about the importance of driving a vehicle safely in work zones. *In 2024, there were 547 traffic crashes in Amarillo District work zones, resulting in 3 fatalities and 19 serious injuries.
TxDOT is launching its Be Safe. Drive Smart. campaign and mark National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 21–25.
The campaign urges Texans to slow down, pay attention and watch for signs and flaggers directing traffic when road construction and maintenance projects pop up along their commutes.
The Be Safe. Drive Smart. campaign is an important part of TxDOT’s Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe. initiative. Drive like a Texan is about embracing the pride, camaraderie and responsibility of being a Texan on the road. By making thoughtful choices, we can all help keep each other safe.
