Amarillo District Observes National Stop on Red Week

This August 2-8, the Amarillo District is proudly participating in National Stop on Red Week 2026, a nationwide campaign dedicated to
saving lives by raising awareness about the dangers of red-light running.
Launched by the Federal Highway Administration, Stop on Red Week serves as a powerful reminder that safe choices behind the wheel can prevent real tragedies.
Here’s why this matters:
• In 2024, red-light-running crashes killed more than 1,100 people.
• That same year, over 141,000 people were injured in these preventable collisions. That’s an average of 3 people killed and 386 people injured. Every. Single. Day.
• Nearly half of those killed were not the violators. They were pedestrians, cyclists, and other innocent road users.
• The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that urban red-light crashes are among the most likely to cause injuries.
In a 2024 national telephone survey conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 80% of drivers said it is very or extremely dangerous to drive through a red light, but 27% reported doing so in the past 30 days.
A red light lasts only moments. The consequences of running one can last a lifetime.
You never know who’s on the other side of the light. It could be someone you love. Your decision to stop, or not, affects everyone on the road.
Together, we can make our streets safer, one stop at a time. Safety is the responsibility of every driver, all the time, not just during Stop on Red Week.
Intersection safety is an extremely important aspect of road safety in our community.

The event is a gift and craft show hosted by Sharing Hope Ministry at the Amarillo Civic Center Complex in the South Exhibit Hall

- Bake Sale: Known as the largest bake sale in the Texas Panhandle, featuring decorated cookies, cakes, pies, and specialty mixes.
- Special Events: Past years have included a “Ladies Night Out” VIP shopping event and photo opportunities with Santa.
