Street teams highlight pedestrian safety in Amarillo

October is the deadliest month of the year for pedestrians

WHEN:

Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

WHERE:

Amarillo Civic Center Complex

MEDIA:

Street teams of “walking billboards” will display key safety messages for drivers and pedestrians. TxDOT is targeting areas with high pedestrian activity or previously reported pedestrian crashes.

AMARILLO – As daylight hours decrease, pedestrian risks increase. That’s why the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is sharing important pedestrian safety messages throughout the state this month.

By providing compelling data and clear safety tips for drivers and pedestrians alike, TxDOT hopes to prevent crashes, especially during the fall and winter months when pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries tend to peak.

As part of its Be Safe. Drive Smart. campaign, TxDOT will deploy street teams of walking billboards to Amarillo and other high-traffic areas throughout the state. The key message for drivers and pedestrians is simple: Stay alert, follow traffic laws and watch out for one another.

The Be Safe. Drive Smart. campaign is an important part of TxDOT’s Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe. initiative. Drive like a Texan is about embracing the pride, camaraderie and responsibility of being a Texan on the road. By making thoughtful choices, we can all help keep each other safe. The information contained in this report represents reportable data collected from the Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Report (CR-3). This information was received and processed by the department as of July 18, 2025. To view additional traffic safety data, visit TxDOT’s Traffic Safety Data Portal online.

The Texas Department of Transportation is responsible for maintaining 80,000 miles of road and for supporting aviation, maritime, rail and public transportation across the state.
