75 YEARS OF DEFENDING DEMOCRACY IN AMARILLO: League of Women Voters of Amarillo welcomes the community to celebrate a major milestone on October 4th at AmTech Career Academy
Since 1950, a group of dedicated citizens in the Yellow City has “envisioned a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge and the confidence to participate.” And now, as the League of Women Voters of Amarillo rolls into our 75th year, we want EVERYONE to come together to join us in the celebration of “Past, Present & Future.”
This ticketed event is scheduled for:
- Saturday, October 4th
- 5:30 – 8:00 PM
- AmTech Career Academy (3601 Plains Blvd, Amarillo)
-
Everyone is welcome, whether you’re in the League or not. The goal of this event is to share the rich history of the organization and how it has shaped voting advocacy in Amarillo for more than seven decades. Members are strongly encouraged to attend, bringing along friends and family to join the fun, learn more about the League, and enjoy the food, community, and educational presentations.
Our speakers will include:
- Kylie Kincaid, Assistant Archivist with the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech
- Joyce LeBombard, President of LWV Texas
- Kimberly Anderson, President of the League of Women Voters of Amarillo
While the national League has been a leading voice in nonpartisan voting advocacy for over 100 years, our local League has been promoting voter education, voter registration, and civic engagement for three-fourths of that long lifespan. Our members have a wide range of perspectives, opinions and politics, but the League is bound by our commitment to the nonpartisan mission. We work for a place where everyone has a voice, and all who support democracy are welcome to join us.
Tickets can be purchased here before Sept. 26th; they will not be sold at the door. If you have questions or would like to cover this event, please contact Michelle Hoggatt at amarillolwv@gmail.com, or call the League at 806-337-2148.
Thank you for supporting us as we empower voters and defend democracy in Amarillo!

The Marriage
of Figaro
Set in 18th-century Spain, The Marriage of Figaro follows one frantic day in the household of Count Almaviva. Figaro, the Count’s valet, is preparing to marry Susanna, the Countess’s maid. However, trouble arises when Figaro discovers that the Count is attempting to seduce Susanna. Outraged, Figaro vows to thwart the Count’s plans and secure his marriage. Susanna, clever and quick-witted, becomes an equal partner in the scheme, exposing the Count’s hypocrisy while navigating her own challenges in the palace.
Meanwhile, the Countess Almaviva suffers quietly, aware of her husband’s infidelities but unsure how to regain his affection. She joins forces with Susanna to teach the Count a lesson, hatching a plan to trap him in his own deceit. They agree to switch places for a nighttime rendezvous: Susanna will dress as the Countess to lure the Count, while the Countess, in Susanna’s clothes, will witness his betrayal firsthand. As the evening unfolds, disguises, mistaken identities, and overheard conversations build toward chaos and comic
confusion.
Adding to the frenzy are several colorful characters. Cherubino, a lovesick teenage page, flits from woman to woman while trying to escape punishment from the Count. Marcellina, once an obstacle to Figaro’s marriage, is revealed to be his long-lost mother, and the scheming Dr. Bartolo turns out to be his father. Even the gardener Antonio, Susanna’s jealous cousin, gets swept up in the madness. Amid the spiraling misunderstandings, love notes go astray, doors are slammed, and secrets are nearly exposed—until the moonlit garden scene where all truths are revealed.
In the end, the Count is caught red-handed and the Countess gives forgiveness, which she offers with grace and dignity. Figaro and Susanna are finally wed, and harmony is restored—at least for now. Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro combines comedy, romance, and social commentary into one of opera’s most beloved masterpieces, offering a timeless reflection on love, power, and redemption.
