Dove Creek Equine Rescue’s Sunset Dinner –

Saturday, October 5th

Canyon, TX: Step back in time to 1887! Join us for Dove Creek Equine Rescue’s annual

Sunset Dinner as we celebrate the founding of Amarillo, TX and its rich history. This year’s

theme, “1887,” commemorates the year Amarillo was founded—a time when Ragtown, a small

settlement along the Fort Worth and Denver City Railroad, began to grow. Amarillo soon

became a key hub for cattle ranchers, railroads, and settlers, with horses playing a vital role in

shaping the region’s future.

This year, we are also celebrating the profound connection between horses, cowboys, and

Comanche culture, recognizing how the horse was a central figure in both worlds. For the

cowboy, the horse was an essential partner in ranching and cattle drives, navigating the rough

terrain of the Texas Panhandle. Cowboys relied on their horses for survival, transportation, and

the livelihood that built the early economy of Amarillo.

For the Comanche, the horse was transformative. Known as the “Lords of the Plains,” the

Comanche became one of the most powerful tribes on horseback, mastering the art of mounted

warfare and hunting. The horse gave them unmatched mobility, allowing them to control vast

territories and defend their way of life. This shared bond over the horse created an undeniable

connection between the cultures that shaped this region’s early history.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 5th, from 5:30-10:00 PM, and get ready for a night

to remember! The evening will feature:

  • Live musicfrom the incredible Kory Brunson Band
  • Dancing under the stars
  • An excitingwhiskey pull
  • Bothliveand silent auctions, including 8 trips of a lifetime generously underwritten by

Amfund

  • Meet the Herd!
  • Step back in time to 1887 and Amarillo’s “Ragtown” beginnings!

Even if you can’t attend in person, you can still participate in the silent auction online! Don’t

miss your chance to bid on incredible items from wherever you are. Your contribution helps

support our mission, no matter where you’re located.

All proceeds from the evening will go toward supporting our mission to restore the dignity,

purpose, and wholeness of unwanted horses who need a second chance in life, and

humans who need healing and direction, by providing compassionate care, connection,

and education.

We believe that all beings—horses and humans alike—deserve a safe place to heal. Dove

Creek is that place. Your participation helps ensure that we can continue to provide that

healing for countless horses and their human companions.

Sponsorship options are available as well as $125 individual tickets and can be purchased

online at https://secure.qgiv.com/control/vt/1037133/registration.

Deadline for sponsorships and tickets is September 27th.

Executive Director Laurie Higgins-Kerley emphasizes the importance of the event:

“This event is more than just a fundraiser. It’s an opportunity for our community to come

together, honor the history of our region, and celebrate the horses who have been such an

integral part of our story. Every dollar raised helps us continue the life-saving work we do here at

Dove Creek Equine Rescue.”
