National Vietnam Veterans
This Friday, March 29, will be a day of remembering all our military personnel who served in the Vietnam War as well as those who served in WWII, Korean War, Gulf and Iraq Wars, and Afghanistan War. The Texas Panhandle War Memorial will honor these veterans with a Ceremony beginning at 1 pm.
The Vietnam war was a war between North and South Vietnam, with the US and others backing the South and the Soviet Union and China backing the North. The French had previously supported South Vietnam and when the French withdrew in 1955, the US assumed that role. The dates of the war span November 1, 1955 to April 30, 1975 when the capital of South Vietnam, Saigon, was captured by the North. U. S. troops had left Vietnam by March 29, 1973. The U. S. lost 58,209 Soldiers; 153,303 were wounded.
At the Texas Panhandle War Memorial, 152 names of Panhandle military personnel who gave their life during the Vietnam War are inscribed on the Vietnam War monuments. We would ask everyone in the Panhandle to remember the sacrifices of our military veterans and their families, and on March 29 call them and thank them for their service.
