Dove Creek Equine Rescue’s Sunset Dinner –

Saturday, October 5th

Canyon, TX: Step back in time to 1887! Join us for Dove Creek Equine Rescue’s annual

Sunset Dinner as we celebrate the founding of Amarillo, TX and its rich history. This year’s

theme, “1887,” commemorates the year Amarillo was founded—a time when Ragtown, a small

settlement along the Fort Worth and Denver City Railroad, began to grow. Amarillo soon

became a key hub for cattle ranchers, railroads, and settlers, with horses playing a vital role in

shaping the region’s future.

This year, we are also celebrating the profound connection between horses, cowboys, and

Comanche culture, recognizing how the horse was a central figure in both worlds. For the

cowboy, the horse was an essential partner in ranching and cattle drives, navigating the rough

terrain of the Texas Panhandle. Cowboys relied on their horses for survival, transportation, and

the livelihood that built the early economy of Amarillo.

For the Comanche, the horse was transformative. Known as the “Lords of the Plains,” the

Comanche became one of the most powerful tribes on horseback, mastering the art of mounted

warfare and hunting. The horse gave them unmatched mobility, allowing them to control vast

territories and defend their way of life. This shared bond over the horse created an undeniable

connection between the cultures that shaped this region’s early history.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 5th, from 5:30-10:00 PM, and get ready for a night
