AMARILLO – The City of Amarillo (COA) Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare Department (AAMW) is again joining the national campaign to help pet adoption – NBC’s Clear the Shelters initiative.
Clear the Shelters runs from Aug. 10 through Sept. 30.
This will be the 10th year for the campaign nationally – with more than 1 million animals adopted across the country during Clear the Shelters in 2023.
“Clear the Shelters is a wonderful program that really helps increase public awareness of pet adoption,” said AAMW Outreach Coordinator Samantha Bennett. “We look forward to participating in this event every year. It really helps highlight the need in the Amarillo community for pet adoption, in addition to the many services provided here at AAMW.”
AAMW is providing a Clear the Shelters special throughout August. Adoption fees for dogs are $25 and cats are $5. Fees include spaying/neutering, vaccinations and micro-chipping. Specific information regarding animals available for adoption at AAMW (including photos, breed, age, etc.) is available online at:

Amarillo League of Women Voters to Launch Lone Star Deep Dive Podcast
on National Voter Registration Day (Tuesday, Sept. 17th)
For inquiring minds interested in big issues impacting Texans, the Amarillo League of Women Voters introduces their new podcast, Lone Star Deep Dive with host Tonya Kleuskens. They’re officially launching it on Tuesday, September 17th in recognition of National Voter Registration Day.
“Having been a League member for more than 42 years, I wanted to create a space of learning for both our members and community members that care about what impacts people in our state.” The podcast spotlights experts and advocates from across the state, including those working with elections/voting advocacy, environmental policy, regional history, water conservation, nuclear energy, civics education, and more.
The podcast launches officially with its 12th episode, featuring Danna Gonzales. She’s the co-founder and president of Voters Voice, a new voting advocacy club at Amarillo College. She shares her passion for getting young people involved in politics. She hopes the club will encourage them to get informed on the big issues that impact their lives, engage with our local elections, and feel empowered to vote. Voters Voice will also be hosting an event on Tuesday, September 17th (in honor of National Voter Registration Day) at the school’s Resource Fair. They’ll be registering voters on campus in advance of the upcoming registration deadline (Oct. 7th). Danna encourages young people to connect with the group on Instagram.
When you tune in, you’ll hear Kleuskens saying, “When we take the time to talk to one another, we often find connections that lead to a better understanding of our communities, our state, our nation and ourselves.” She says the podcast aims to bring diverse voices together for meaningful conversations about issues that matter most to our communities.
“It’s my hope that the podcast will encourage more engagement with what’s going on across our city, county and state – and hopefully it will lead to new connections and partnerships throughout our Texas Leagues,” she continued. “We want these conversations to allow our listeners to become more informed, educated voters.”
Lone Star Deep Dive is available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. For questions, comments, suggestions, or to request an interview, please contact Tonya at info@lonestardeepdive.com. Kleuskens says, “We truly welcome your feedback, and please be sure to subscribe, like and leave a comment about the series. Every engagement and share really helps get the word out about what we’re building here in Amarillo.” You can also call her at 806-344-2584. She is currently scheduling new content for Fall/Winter 2024.
Again, the podcast launch falls on Tuesday, September 17th in honor of National Voter Registration Day, on which the League will host voter registration booths at the following locations:
- Palace Coffee Company (Wolflin): 11a – 1p & 5-7p
- Palace Coffee Company (Canyon): 11a-1p
- Palace Coffee (Summit): 11a-1p
- Panhandle Independent Living Center (417 SW 10th St.): 12 – 2p
“Please remember that the deadline to register to vote is October 7th,” said Bob Roulston, Voter Services Co-Chair.” He also suggests all voters should check their registration to ensure they appear on the current voter rolls by clicking here. “You want to be sure you’ll have no issues a the polls, and we’re finding many voters who have been dropped since the primary. Better safe than sorry!”
If your business, organization, or social/civic club is interested in booking the League to host a VOTER REGISTRATION BOOTH before Oct. 7th, please contact the Amarillo League of Women Voters. Reach them by phone at 806-337-2148. You can also send an email to amarillolwv@gmail.com. For more about the Amarillo League, visit the organization’s website. New members are always welcome!
