CANYON, Texas (January 2024) – In a collaborative effort, Canyon High School, Randall High School, West Plains High School, and Midway Alternative High School in the Canyon Independent School District (CISD), are proud to announce the “CISD Finance Your Future Night.” This event, dedicated to empowering high school seniors and their parents with the knowledge for lifelong success, is scheduled for Thursday, February 1st, from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM in the Conference Room at Happy State Bank Stadium.
This informative come-and-go event is part of CISD’s mission to empower students for lifelong success. It offers a platform for families to engage with financial experts, gain crucial insights into planning for college finances, and receive direct assistance with FAFSA applications and scholarship information.
Event highlights include:
- One-on-one FAFSA assistance
- Detailed scholarship application information
- Q&A sessions with financial experts
- Giveaways and a drawing for several scholarships sponsored by Education Credit Union and the Amarillo College Foundation
This event is open to all high school seniors and their parents in the Canyon Independent School District.

DHDC celebrates another year of the Girls Who Science program for 2024
Amarillo, TX – Girls Who Science is a monthly program put on by the Don Harrington Discovery Center, which started in February of 2023. Girls aged 10-18 are encouraged to attend to hear from women in the STEM industry, conduct interactive experiments, and explore career-focused STEM activities at NO COST.
The programs of 2024 are from 4:45 pm to 6:00 pm, the first Monday of every month.
DHDC has brought in professors, surgeons, doctors, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service, and engineers from Pantex to speak at Girls Who Science. Young women in upper elementary school through high school are encouraged to attend.

Wednesday, February 14th, from 10 am until 4 pm a special Valentines Day tribute, “Cards and Letters from Home” will be on display at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial and Education Center, honoring Navy Veteran Jackie Smith of Amarillo.
In 1991, ET-2 Smith was assigned to the USS Tarawa which was assigned duty in the Persian Gulf during the Persian Gulf War. Students from Smith’s elementary schools, Oakdale, Landergin, and Humphrey’s Highland sent Valentine Day cards and letters to Smith expressing their respect, valentine’s wishes, and wishing him a safe return home. These cards and letters will be on display for all to enjoy.
Students from each of the schools have been invited to tour the War Memorial Education Center and view the exhibits. Students who attended these schools in 1991, were in class with Mrs. Adams (Landergin), Mrs. Rankin (Humphrey’s Highland), or Mrs. McCarter (Oakdale) are welcome to the War Memorial Education Center to view their work from 33 years ago, to read and to remember.

Colorectal Cancer Screening Program Partnering with Kendra Scott
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

The Get F.I.T to Stay Fit program uses a free, at-home testing method called Fecal Immunochemical Test (F.I.T) for colorectal cancer screening. The program is grant-funded through the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) and serves the top 32 counties of the Texas Panhandle
Colorectal cancer impacts both men and women. Almost all colorectal cancers begin as precancerous polyps in the colon. These polyps can exist for years before invasive cancer develops. Colorectal polyps and colorectal cancer do not always cause symptoms, especially at first. That is why getting screened regularly for colorectal cancer is so important. Screening can find the precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer or early in their development, when treatment works best.
The CDC recommends that adults age 45 to 75 be screened for colorectal cancer. People at an increased risk of getting colorectal cancer should talk to their doctor about when to begin screening, which test is right for them and how often to get tested.
Symptoms may include a change in bowel habits, blood in or on stool, diarrhea, constipation, or feeling that the bowel does not empty all the way, abdominal pain, aches, or cramps that don’t go away, and losing weight.
The risk of getting colorectal cancer increases as people age. Most cases occur in people who are 50 years old or older. Other risk factors include having inflammatory bowel
disease, a personal or family history of colorectal cancer or colorectal polyp or a genetic syndrome. Lifestyle factors that may contribute to an increased risk of colorectal cancer include obesity, alcohol consumption, tobacco use, a lack of regular physical activity, a diet low in fruits and vegetables, a low-fiber and high-fat diet, or a diet high in processed meats.

For the first time ever, Maverick Boys & Girls Club of Amarillo members will be Ross Junior Employees on March 2nd to encourage support for the national Ross fundraiser. After completing the application and interview process, these young individuals have been selected to fulfill various roles such as door greeters, register helpers, and store organizers. This unique opportunity not only equips them with valuable skills early on but also emphasizes the importance of community involvement and partnership.
Beyond their assigned tasks, the members are actively promoting support for Power Hour, a vital daily education program focused on homework and tutoring. Given that a majority of the club’s members are below grade level, and over 85% of them come from low-income backgrounds, Power Hour is a crucial resource. With up to 650 kids benefiting daily, Power Hour provides valuable academic support and opportunities for a brighter future, ensuring that every child has the chance to succeed.
Every year, over three million young people are served by Boys & Girls Clubs across the country. To demonstrate ongoing support for shaping the future of today’s youth, Ross Stores, Inc. has partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs of America for a three-week program called “Help Local Kids Thrive.” From February 10th to March 3rd, customers in Amarillo are invited to make monetary contributions at their local Ross Dress for Less (“Ross”) store during checkout, with proceeds benefitting the Maverick Boys & Girls Club of Amarillo.
Rooted in a shared commitment to helping young people reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens, this annual fundraiser helps to actualize the dreams of many local kids and teens.
Campaign Facts:

Downtown Women’ Center (DWC) serves homeless women in recovery from alcohol and other drug addictions through our soon to be four shelters: Haven House, Abba House, Gratitude House, and Haven House Too for women new in recovery who are pregnant or have children with them. There is more to come about this needed and exciting expansion!
More than 250 women have successfully completed the DWC Recovery Program since 2007 when we started having graduation ceremonies. Barnes Jewelry designed and made a special one-of-a-kind cross necklace for our graduates in 2007 and the necklaces are still given to each graduate today.

Special Amarillo City Council Workshop Set for Tuesday
AMARILLO – Amarillo City Council has scheduled a special workshop for Tuesday (March 26) at 8:30 a.m. The workshop will be open to the public and livestreamed on the City of Amarillo YouTube channel.
The workshop will be available online at: www.youtube.com/CityofAmarillo
The workshop will be at council chambers on the third floor of City Hall.
Discussion may include numerous broad topics such as governance and ends policies, public safety, infrastructure, development, community services, parks and recreation, water resources, public works, finance, council strategic pillars and milestones, policies and procedures, the Amarillo City Charter, ordinances, resolutions and other
matters related to the desired direction and plans for the city.
The council may reach broad consensus on the mission, values, priorities, expectations and
governance policies for the city. No final decisions or vote will be taken.
City Council will meet for its regularly scheduled meeting at 3 p.m. Tuesday (March 26). The regularly scheduled work session is scheduled for 1 p.m. All meetings will be in council chambers on the third floor of City Hall.
